High School Bullying Needs to be Stopped!

By Brendon Bowman

Bullying is something that happens in most if not all high schools in the United States. Many of which take preventative measures to attempt to keep that from happening, but is it enough?

In the United States, schools could take more preventative measures to ensure that there is less bullying.

Leadership Involvement

According to Kris Bosworth, in his article The impact of leadership involvement in enhancing high school climate and reducing bullying: An exploratory study, "Leadership involvement in the change process appears to be a key component." This supports the idea the high schools in America need to put systems into place to keep bullying from occurring. There are already some laws that do this, but it appears that since bullying still happens frequently, these laws are not strong enough.

"Today's laws and policies about bullying are fragmented and inconsistent."

The American Psychological Association says this in reference to the laws that have been passed in the last decade to counteract bullying. These laws are meant to act against students that have bullied, but they are very unclear and are often not enforced.

Personal Experience

When I was in high school, my brother had been a victim of bullying. The bully had harassed him on multiple occasions, and it caused my brother to cry when he was at home. I had to stick up for him one day because the school did not take any action against the bully. This was outrageous, but it is a very common occurrence in high schools around the US.

"They need to toughen up"

Some people may say the the students that are being bullied can handle it on their own, and they need to toughen up. In many situations, this may not be the case. If a bullying has a clear strength advantage over the kid being bullied, then there is no way for them to defend themselves. Authorities involvement in this situation would be needed. Also, if the bullying is causing mental health issues for the student being bullied, then they may need support from a others in order to overcome it. The school  itself must take action against the bully, so the kid does not have to worry about it, and they can work on their mental health.

Bullying has been happening for a long time in high schools all across the United States. The administrations have been taking some preventative measures to keep bullies from doing it, but many more laws and rules need to be put into place in the coming future. Do your part by stopping bullying, and showing support for those who are bullied.
