Hazing and Its Degradation

HAZING

 AND

 ITS DEGRADATION

GREEK LIFE takes stand against hazing

Hazing has become a problem affecting adolescents and young adults on many college universities and sports teams. Hazing is a ritual or activity that causes humiliation, abuse, harassment, or degradation to another person. When hazing crosses our minds, we often think of big organizations such as Universities with fraternities, sororities, and sports teams. This is where many of these humiliating acts take place or single oneself out. Introduction hazing is what happens often in college to initiate and create one's trust by testing one's loyalty within the new members to the older members. Hazing can be extinguished and prevented with the right leadership.

To give some background: Jordan Jakusz feels as if she was the principal of a hazing incident. She was kicked out of Phi Theta Chi for being sick. On March 29, she asked friend Beissel to take her to the hospital and was there for most of the day. “I feel like I was treated unfairly throughout the whole process of rushing for Phi Theta Chi,” Jakusz said. “One of the things we had to do was meet with all the sisters and I fell behind a little bit because I got sick.” Jakusz said during her friend taking her to the hospital she was getting calls from her 'sisters' harassing her and stating they thought she was lying about being sick. The next day, Jakusz was asked to leave the sorority for her "bad attitude."

"I thought it was cool that most of the fraternities and sororities were changing their cover photos on Facebook to 'We don't haze.' So it made me feel good even though they're still a part of Greek life, they're saying it's not okay to treat someone like that"  added Beissel .

Hailee Beissel, freshman Psychology major had a friend ( Jordan Jakusz ) who was in a sorority the "Phi Theta Chi" organization. Beissel was not in the organization and Beissel's thought“I haven’t changed my opinion on Greek Life. It’s not for me personally, but I don’t think it’s a bad thing at all,”

INCREASE AWARENESS

As sad as it is, hazing does occur throughout groups and organizations the most. One of the significant ways to increase awareness is to stand as a pack. Especially while being in an organization, team, or group you should stick together as one to hold that bond. It is not hard to be kind to one another. The two major source outlets we hear about recent events and stories is social media and news outlets. If we hear about hazing that makes the cut of spreading the awareness and to not let it happen.

"According to 2017 research study conducted by YouGov, a public opinion research company, as many as 22 % of Americans indicate that they have been hazed. As well as younger adults (ages 18-34) indicate experiencing more hazing and older adults ages of 55 and up and less." Hazing has a dual purpose of promoting loyalty to a social group.

Hazing has been around for many decades and sadly will continue due to individuals. There is a way to decrease it. In environments where hazing may occur could be a leadership developmental issue and is based off of what type of power that organization holds and decides to allow. The societal prevention will increase from institutions continuing to grow the ban. Now, hazing may go unreported or unrecognized but confront the issue to attempt the stop on hazing.

REVOLUTIONIZE HAZING

It is an increasing problem, the public, should be aware of what hazing actually is, recognize it, and prevent it. If hazing is going to stop, the one's in charge have to step up and change the culture of their future. We can improve making a change by addressing or reducing the power differential between members and initiates, develop anti-hazing policy, and acknowledging the evidence, respectfully, that leads to these hazing standpoints.

Hazing may be through physical or emotional actions to tie that knot of trust within your organization. Bonding is often a common excuse for hazing, but why is it let go? The power and authority one has a major effect on the allowance of these acts. The procedures used to enforce hazing legitimize the positions earned by the group members within their social group. Usually, hazing is to test one's loyalty to earn their membership upon.  Many of us are unaware of what exactly hazing is, even if it were to happen right. This type of behavior is very popular throughout college universities that have fraternities or sororities.

The goal is to inspire others through an organization, not use what authority one has and makes sure it is known in a negative way. To overthrow a person who has that power they think they can hold at measures will engage in a change. To help prevent hazing you should take a stand when witnessing a humiliating action. The more power an individual has means the less likely they will be held accountable. Hazing can be extinguished and prevented with the right leadership.
