The Problem of Hazing and Its Degradation
THE PROBLEM OF HAZING
&
ITS DEGRADATION
In a law journal through database explains why degrading is prohibited due to how gruesome some of the acts have grown. This is decided under the European Court that degrading is humiliation under the European court convention. Any cases that are brought before this court that amounts to degrading treatment and punishment under Article 3 include interrogation, conditions of confinement, corporal punishment, strip searches, and a failure to provide adequate health care. They classify degradation as "symbolic dignitary harm." Therefore, this is why bringing people down is an act of degrading one another.
A little joke can turn into a legal case. The hazing crime depends on the amount of injury caused. Hazing has a dual purpose of promoting loyalty to a social group. There is no good defense, but just don't try to fit in where you don't belong. Hazers have a need to feel in control and powerful. It isn't a part of our ritual. You should never be a bystander. If you see something, then say something.
It is theorized that behavior is influenced by race and sex. Hazing is always preventable. You don't have to be involved in something that makes you uncomfortable. Hazing is not harmless and has been a social issue for decades. It contributes to an abusive climate. These rituals of hazing will not go away. If not properly addressed, hazing could possibly become a self-perpetuating problem.
"Sports Hazing Out of Control?"
In a FOX news interview that published an article authored by Sean Hannity and Alan Colmes was published on May 18th, 2006; "Sports Hazing Out of Control?" This interview had a guest speaker, Susan Lipkins and Susan had an interview casted. Susan was an influencer who and spread the awareness about what "hazed" is towards another in groups. A survey resulted that of all the U.S. student athletes in these groups have experienced hazing, but 91% of them could not perceive what hazing really was when it happened.
Hazing is a serious topic that most youths in today's generation face. The problem with hazing is that hazing is not being reported. Since it is a growing problem, the public, should be aware of what hazing actually is, recognize it, and prevent it. There can be many different types of hazing and different areas where they have occurred. Each situation is a different situation. If hazing is going to stop, the one's in charge have to step up and change the culture of their future.
There has been progress made through the attempts to extinguish and prevent the degrading acts from hazing. The societal prevention will increase from institutions continuing to grow the ban and push to make the improvement successful. We can improve making a change by addressing or reducing the power differential between members and initiates, develop anti-hazing policy, and acknowledging the evidence, respectfully, that leads to these hazing standpoints. Some may be a victim or a culprit. Victims of hazing are often reluctant to report the physical or emotional abuse brought upon them due to the shame involved by speaking out. Many victims reported experiencing physical trauma, depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem throughout numerous studies. Nonetheless, this "degrading" from "hazing" is a serious concern. This is a problem that will be acknowledged, or else how will we be able to fix it? Hazing can be prevented with the right leadership.
