How to help the homeless

Homeless man asking for some help

Have you ever wondered what it's like to be homeless in the United States? Put yourself in that situation. Imagine you're in New York city on a cold day. You have nowhere to go home to and you have no food. People walk by you and stare while you're trying to get money for a meal. In the United States we can prevent homelessness by donating, volunteering your time and responding with kindness.

Donating

You can help the homeless by donating. You might ask what you can donate. You can donate clothing, money to any shelter, or food. You can donate old clothing you have instead of throwing them out. While walking by the homeless you can give them a few bucks or you can give them your leftovers if you’re coming out of a restaurant.

Volunteering

You may ask what kind of volunteering you can do. You can volunteer at a shelter, or a soup kitchen. A shelter is a temporary living space for the homeless. A soup kitchen is where the homeless come to get free food served to them. You can do either of these things to help the homeless.

Responding with kindness

People who are homeless normally tend to get ignored on the street. We can respect the homeless instead of staring at them while walking by. We can treat just how we would treat any other human being. While walking by the homeless we can give them a smile or say something nice to them instead of ignoring them.

Personal story

A few years ago, while I was in New York, my classmates and I decided that we should give the homeless the leftover food that we had from dinner. We had about three bags full of food. In the bags there were boxes of penne pasta, calamari, and some garlic bread. Every homeless person we gave food to told us how much of a struggle it is to find anything. They all told us how no one really even acknowledges them.
